Ground Black Seed Steeped in Natural Vinegar
In traditional medicine, black seed (Nigella sativa) is hot and dry in temperament, while vinegar is cold and dry. Combining the two partly balances the coldness of the vinegar and makes it milder, so the mixture is especially useful for people with a cold and moist temperament. When ground black seed is left to steep in natural vinegar (for example grape or apple vinegar) for a few days, the two interact and, from the traditional point of view, their properties are strengthened.
Benefits of the black seed vinegar
1. A stronger effect against parasites and microbes
Black seed has a disinfecting effect, and combined with vinegar its power against harmful parasites, bacteria, viruses and fungi increases. The mixture is also recommended for clearing phlegm, excess moisture and thick humours, and for cleansing the stomach and intestines.
2. Reduces phlegm and harmful moisture in the brain and stomach
It suits people with a cold and moist (Balgami) temperament very well.
3. Strengthens digestion and relieves bloating
It is very helpful for indigestion, wind and a heavy stomach.
4. Clears the sinuses and excess mucus
Taking this vinegar can help reduce sinus drainage and phlegm at the back of the throat.
5. May lower blood fats and blood sugar (in some temperaments)
Because of the fat-reducing effect of vinegar and the sugar-balancing property of black seed.
6. Opens obstructions and clears black bile
In traditional medicine, black seed is known for opening obstructions, especially in the liver and brain. Used with vinegar, it can help clear melancholic (black bile) humours.
7. Helps with phlegmatic and melancholic headaches
Some sources say the mixture (for example one tablespoon in the morning on an empty stomach) helps with cold headaches, a heavy head, and poor concentration caused by an excess of cold or moisture.
What modern research says
Both black seed and natural vinegar (especially apple vinegar) contain polyphenols and antioxidant compounds. Steeping black seed in vinegar helps release its main active compound, thymoquinone, which has been studied for cell-protective and anti-inflammatory effects.
Vinegar is disinfecting on its own; combined with black seed, which contains antimicrobial and antifungal compounds, this property is strengthened, which may help against digestive or skin infections.
Some studies suggest that black seed can help control blood sugar. Since vinegar also lowers blood sugar, the combination may have a combined effect on insulin resistance and blood sugar.
The mixture can act as a tonic for the digestive system, improving digestion by increasing bile flow, especially in people with weak digestion and chronic wind.
Suggested use of the vinegar
- In the morning on an empty stomach, or before bed: one tablespoon of the strained vinegar, preferably diluted with water.
- On the skin: it is applied carefully to some fungal infections and warts. Do not use it on broken skin or on sensitive areas, including genital warts, without a doctor’s advice.
The second step: black seed with honey
After steeping, separate the vinegar, mix the soaked black seed with natural honey, and take 2 dessert spoons a day. According to traditional medicine, this mixture is a strong, balanced, many-sided remedy that cleanses the body and strengthens its vital systems.
The ingredients and their properties
- Black seed: hot and dry; clears moisture and thick humours, opens obstructions, strengthens the brain and the immune system.
- Natural vinegar: cold and dry; purifies the blood, clears phlegm, dissolves sticky matter.
- Natural honey: hot and moist; a general tonic, a carrier for remedies and a balancer.

Suggested use (in general)
