A Dark Line on the Nail: When to See a Doctor

Most nail signs are harmless: white spots, fine lengthwise lines, brittleness…

But there is one sign that should never be put off:

A new and changing brown or black band on a single nail.

What is this line?

A brown or black stripe running from the base of the nail to its tip forms when pigment cells in the nail root give colour to the nail.

This line can have many harmless causes:

  • Lines seen on several nails in people with naturally darker skin
  • A knock and bleeding under the nail
  • Some medicines
  • Some infections

But rarely, it can also be the sign of a serious skin disease. That is why care is needed.

Which features need attention?

If any of the following apply, see a doctor, preferably a dermatologist:

  • The line is new, especially in adulthood
  • It is on a single nail
  • It is widening, darkening or changing colour
  • The line’s colours are irregular (different shades of brown)
  • The colour spreads to the skin around the nail
  • It comes with cracking, deformity or bleeding of the nail

A knock, or something else?

When you knock a nail, bleeding can occur under it and form a dark mark. A mark caused by bleeding usually:

  • appears after a particular knock,
  • moves up as the nail grows and finally disappears when cut.

If the mark stays in place even though the nail grows, or dark colour keeps coming from the base of the nail, it must be assessed.

Traditional medicine and this sign

The traditional science of signs is a valuable way of reading the body as a whole. But each sign has its own place.

A new and changing dark band on the nail should not be put down only to temperament, a knock or a nutritional deficiency. It is one of the signs that need a medical assessment before any traditional interpretation.

A good practitioner knows which signs fall within their own field and which should be referred to a doctor.

Frequently asked questions

Is every black line on a nail dangerous? No. Most have a harmless cause. But a new, changing line needs to be assessed by a specialist.

Is a black line a vitamin deficiency? It isn’t right to attribute this line to a vitamin deficiency; a specialist assessment is needed first.

How long should I wait? Don’t wait. When you notice a new, changing line, make an appointment.

Conclusion

Most nail signs are harmless, but a new and changing dark line on a single nail is not one of them. When you notice this sign, seeing a dermatologist is the right step.
