Thyroid Problems: Signs in the Hair, Nails and Skin

Farzollah Gholizadeh and Fariba Bayrami

The thyroid gland is a small but very powerful organ at the front of the neck. The hormones it produces set the rate at which the body uses energy.

When this rate changes, the effects don’t stay inside; they can also be seen in the hair, nails and skin.

Why the hair, nails and skin?

Hair, nails and skin are tissues that constantly renew themselves. To renew, they need a steady metabolism, blood, nutrients and hormones.

Because thyroid hormones affect this rate of renewal, thyroid disorders can leave traces in these tissues.

Signs in the hair

  • A marked increase in shedding
  • Dryness and brittleness
  • Thinning of the hair
  • A change in hair texture

Signs in the nails

  • A change in growth rate (slowing or speeding up)
  • Brittleness
  • A change in nail quality
  • In some cases, the nail separating from its bed

Signs in the skin

  • Dryness or, on the contrary, excessive sweating
  • Thickening or thinning of the skin
  • Puffiness in the face, especially around the eyes

What really matters: the pattern

None of these signs on its own means a thyroid disorder. Hair loss and brittle nails can each have dozens of causes.

But think of this example:

  • dry skin,
  • always feeling cold,
  • hair that has become dry,
  • less energy,
  • constipation starting,
  • and weight changing compared with before.

There is no longer “a single sign”. A pattern is taking shape.

Conversely, if sweating, intolerance of heat, palpitations, restlessness, weight loss and nail changes come together, that is a different pattern.

What to assess together

When you notice a change in your hair, nails or skin, also ask about:

  • Weight: Is there an unexplained gain or loss?
  • Reaction to temperature: Do you feel colder, or sweat more, than before?
  • Heart: Have you noticed palpitations or slowing?
  • Energy: Is there excessive tiredness or restlessness?
  • Digestion: Constipation, or frequent bowel movements?
  • Mood and sleep: Is there a marked change?

The traditional-medicine view

In Sina–Unani medicine, the body is seen as a whole. Hair, nails and skin are assessed together with heat, cold, moisture and dryness, digestion, sleep and the pulse.

For example, constant cold and dryness, and a feeling of heat with sweating, are read in traditional medicine as different pictures. But this assessment does not replace tests; a blood test is needed to understand thyroid function.

When should you see a doctor?

If changes in your hair, nails or skin come with several of the general signs above, see a doctor for thyroid tests. Don’t delay either if you notice swelling in your neck or difficulty swallowing.

Frequently asked questions

Does hair loss mean the thyroid? Not always. But if it comes with other signs, the thyroid should be checked.

Will hair and nails improve with thyroid treatment? If the cause is the thyroid, improvement is expected over time with treatment; but because nails and hair renew slowly, it can take months.

Conclusion

The thyroid can change quietly, but the body can make it noticeable in the hair, nails and skin. What matters is looking not at a single sign but at the pattern.
